Individuals & Maritals

Recently the OU posted an article that suggests that individual therapy can be harmful to relationships. I strongly disagreed with the article and, after submitting a comment on it to that effect, was asked to write a longer response (along with some other mental health professionals).  See the original article here and the followups here.

This whole issue is reminiscent of an article I wrote and posted a few months back.

  1. I don't see how individual therapy can be harmful to relationships. It's a step-by-step problem solving, where in one must first "find himself" in the midst of all his problems, before he faces the problem in the relationship. It's like taking tiny steps and building the relationship [again], piece by piece.

  2. I am in agreement with you, which is why I wrote the resposne I did! (Although I do see how individual therapy *could* be harmful to a relationship, if you have a lousy therapist.)

  3. I totally agree with you Kayla. When my husband and I had marital problems a few years back, I've tried doing my own personal therapy by attending meditation and yoga classes, spiritual groups, among other activities to help me relax and fight away the stress that it's causing me. It helped me in a way because I dealt better with our situation.
